Matthew Cox: Husband charged with murder after young mum Tayla Cox and baby are discovered inside a house in Rockhampton during a welfare check

A young mother and her infant daughter have been found dead in a confronting blood-soaked scene, as her husband is charged with their alleged murders.

Tayla Cox, 30, and her baby Murphy Margaret, 11 weeks, were discovered by Queensland police at a Park Avenue home in Rockhampton at 10.52am on Thursday, during a welfare check.

Initial investigations indicate the pair were allegedly killed on Tuesday afternoon.

Matthew Cox, 31, has been charged with two counts of domestic violence murder.

Cox had flown out of Rockhampton to Brisbane on Tuesday and stayed at an apartment in Fortitude Valley.

He then presented himself to Fortitude Valley Police Station and allegedly reported the deaths of his wife and daughter to officers on Thursday morning.

A welfare check was then conducted at the Park Avenue home and the bodies were discovered.

Ms Cox, maiden name Black, grew up in Rockhampton and went to St Ursula’s College Yeppoon, reports The Courier Mail.

She was a repair co-ordinator for a construction company in the Rockhampton suburb of Berserker.

Her and her husband were living in Victoria for some time during their relationship.

They moved back to Rockhampton after purchasing their Park Avenue home in November 2022.

The move came as Mr Cox secured a job at a local radio station.

A crime scene was established shortly after police arrived at the property.

Officers said there was a large amount of blood at the unsettling scene.

‘This a very difficult and confronting scene for police and emergency services and we will be working hard to determine exactly what has occurred,’ Queensland police said.

Investigations are ongoing.

A second crime scene was also established at the apartment complex Cox was reportedly staying at in Fortitude Valley after flying into Brisbane.

Cox will appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
