Who is Alex McNear?

McNear is the daughter of Suzanne McNear, who was an editor for Playboy Magazine’s fiction features throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

Alex is also a writer, and has been putting together a collection of short plays, ‘each one with no more than two characters… humorous plays about catastrophes.’

After working at Playboy herself, Alex then worked with Paul Theroux and the late South African novelist Nadine Gordimer.

McNear married the former Serbian boxer, Bob Bozic, in 1987, before the pair later split.

When were Alex McNear and Barack Obama in a relationship?

McNear and Obama dated briefly between 1979 and 1981, when they both attended Occidental College in Los Angeles.

However, the relationship failed to last after the former President transferred to Columbia University.

The pair attempted to maintain a long-distance relationship and communicate through letters, but eventually broke up.

Despite their separation, the two reportedly reconnected over dinner, a year after Obama transferred to Columbia University in New York in 1981.

What did Barack Obama say in his letter to Alex McNear?

In his newly-redacted letter, Obama described homosexuality as a way to detach from the present and potentially evade the recurring theatrics of earthly existence.

‘In regard to homosexuality, I must say that I believe this is an attempt to remove oneself from the present, a refusal perhaps to perpetuate the endless farce of earthly life.’

He admitted to a daily intellectual connection with men, but claims it was solely within the realms of imagination.

‘You see, I make love to men daily, but in the imagination,’ he wrote to McNear in the letter reported by the Post.

When their relationship had concluded, McNear chose to redact the more explicit sections of the letter.

However, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Garrow managed to locate and incorporate these passages in his biography titled ‘Rising Star.’

Where is Alex McNear now?

Obama’s letter to McNear is currently held by Emory University, which does not allow its photography or removal.

It has resurfaced due to the extensive interview conducted by Obama biographer David Garrow.

But Harvey Klehr, a friend of Garrow, was able to transcribe the redacted segments by hand and shared them with the author.

Klehr provided the concealed section of the letter to The New York Post for publication, hence why previously unseen sections of the letter have now become public.

Following on from her former romance with Obama, McNear is currently married to Dr Robert Stein, a child psychotherapist in Long Island, New York.

McNear said she thought Obama was ‘interesting in a very particular way. He really worked his way through an idea or question, turned it over, looked at it from all sides, and then he came to a precise and elegant conclusion,’ told David Maraniss, the author of Barack Obama: The Story.

‘We sat and talked and ate and drank wine. Or at least I drank wine. I think he drank something stronger. It was one of those dark, old Italian restaurants that don’t exist in New York anymore. It was the kind of place where they leave you alone.

‘I remember thinking how happy I felt just talking to him, that I could talk to him for hours. We walked slowly back to my apartment, on 90th, and said good-bye. After that we started spending much more time together.’
